Colloquium: "Rational Perceivers"
Evan Sommers (WashU)
Abstract: What does it take for a perceiver to have the capacity to respond rationally to what they perceive? I explore this question by focusing on the manner in which organisms, including humans, attend in response to perception. I distinguish three levels of flexibility that an attentional system can have and argue that only an organism with an attentional system of the most flexible sort can respond rationally to what it perceives.
The department and the PNP program coordinate regular colloquia, typically on Thursdays at 4pm. These represent a major part of the education experience in the department, and graduate students are expected to attend.
