The Helen Stenner Memorial Essay Prize Competition for graduate students was endowed in 1978 by Professor Alfred Stenner in memory of his late wife, Helen Stenner. Professor Stenner specialized in Philosophy of Science and was a member of the Department of Philosophy from 1962 until his retirement in 1987. This year we celebrate the 40th anniversary of the competition. In 1996 the competition was revised to include an award for undergraduate students.

The Competition is open to all undergraduate majors and minors and graduate students in the Department of Philosophy at Washington University. The competition among undergraduate students is separate from the competition among graduate students. Two separate prizes may be given.

Essays can be on any subject of philosophical interest. It should be double-spaced in NYT Roman 12-point font, and should not exceed six thousand words in length. Only one entry per student is permitted. Essays that have been previously awarded prizes are not suitable for submission.
